“So one night the king of Syria sent a great army with many chariots and horses to surround the city. When the servant of Elisha got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha.
“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was lled with horses and chariots of re.”
2 Kings 6:14-17
Two against ten thousand. The odds were de nitely against the prophet and his young protégé. Elisha had been confounding the King of Syria for months. Every time the King of Syria planned an attack against God’s people, the Holy Spirit would inform Elisha. As a result, Israel would be forewarned and ready.
After a series of stinging defeats, the Syrian King decided to attack the source of his frustration: the man who knew how to hear God’s Voice. So one morning, they woke up to discover the enemy was coming over the hill after them and Elisha’s servant was pretty freaked out.
But who can blame him?
All the evidence pointed to imminent capture, torture, and certain death. But Elisha’s servant did not initially see the true reality of the situation. The natural facts blinded him to the invisible forces of God that surrounded and outnumbered the enemy.
So Elisha prayed for the Lord to open his spiritual eyes. Once he saw with eyes of faith, his fears melted away. How many times have you looked at the circumstances of your life and been overwhelmed by fear, only to later see the same problem with different eyes and realize that God was with you?
The enemy wants us to see his version of the world and be overwhelmed. He wants us to think we are powerless and too insigni cant to make any difference. But when we do the part that God has put in our heart, it allows God to do His.
God has given our church big vision. We know we are to develop thousands of disciples. People who will powerfully bring God’s love to others. People who will align themselves with God’s Word and bring radical transformation to their relationships.
People who will see the impossible with their outer eyes but have the eyes of faith working on the inside. They know nothing is impossible. To do this we must ask the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to see what HE sees for our church.
This community needs our church. God has given us a prophetic voice that is best heard when every member of our church is fully committed to hearing God’s Word, and sharing His love with others.
What part is God asking you to play in bringing about His vision for Abundant Life? Is there any area of your life that you need God to open your eyes to see what God sees in order to defeat your fears and believe that it is possible?
Father, I ask you to open my spiritual eyes to see what you see in me and for the future of our church. Help me to have the faith and courage for the steps you are asking me, and my family to take so that we can loose your miraculous power through our obedience.
We want to see the kingdom of heaven manifested here in Syracuse, New York, as it is in heaven.
